I tried to call Chemical Engineering Corp (the manufacturer, this is a pre-MacClean unit), but all I get is a fax machine. It has been running great, now for the last 2 months, every time it regenerates the brine tank is left with 3/4 tank full of water (about 15 gallons) We have checked for. I'm assuming I also have a plugged brine line somewhere (maybe in the brine tank I didn't clean that part) which is why the brine level only goes down about 2 inches in ~50 minutes of my "extended" brine cycle. Water Softeners and Air Filtration Systems - maclean 1501 water softener brine tank full of water - We have had this water system for around 6 years. Looks to me like the problem is in the controls somewhere (not the physical valving). At the end of the cycle, the motor runs and advances everything back to the starting position (so I get about a 10-second rapid rinse and a 10-second brine refill as the valve is moving). But when the control changes to step 3 (and 4), the motor does NOT run so the valve stays in the same (Brine) position (all the way down). The valve moves correctly for steps 1 and 2. There are four steps in regeneration: 1) Backwash, 2) Brine, 3) Rapid Rinse, and 4) Brine Refill. I watched as it recycles, and it appears that the control valve is not moving correctly. I greased all the seals and O-rings with silicone grease and reassembled it. I tore the control head completely apart and cleaned everything (the cylindrical screen at the brine inlet was almost plugged with iron deposits). Typically, a softener will remove some ferrous iron until the resin bed becomes fouled to the extent that Recheck well pumping rate and repair or replace as required. Now, it uses VERY little salt, does not refill the brine tank properly, and does not soften adequately. The MacClean valves and tank are proprietary in design after 2001 ( bought out by CUNO, which in turn was bought out by 3M ).

5) Do NOT install the softener in a location where freezing temperatures occur. Media and Rebuild Parts for MacClean mca1001. Programming the various settings for a MacCLEAN water softener is a simple process. Temperatures above 100☏ (38☌) will damage the softener and void the factory warranty.

4) Locate the softener in the supply line BEFORE the water heater. First, we would get a big slug of salty water every time it would regenerate (which I would have to manually flush out). 3) Locate in correct relationship to other water conditioning equipment (Figure 1). I'm having problems with an Intellis water softener, about 10 years old.
